If you take a look at the history of Hypnosis, you will find that Franz Anton Mesmer is considered to be the father of modern day hypnosis. He seemed to believe that there was some type of fluid that was quasi-magnetic in the air that all of us breathe, and that the nerves in the body absorb this fluid. He would try to treat his patients in such a way to make sure that he unblocked the circulation of this fluid in the body, and when the circulation of the liquid was corrected, the disease would be cured.
When it comes to the history of Hypnosis, even back in the 1800's, there were many physicians that were practicing it, especially across Europe . It was used as an analgesic as well as an anesthetic before there were so many drugs available. Over time it faded out for a time, especially after Queen Victoria went with the administration of Chloroform when she had her third baby. Also, Freud was not a big fan of hypnosis either, and this also lead to the decrease in popularity of the time.
